IN OUR CLASSROOMS: High School Spanish 1 students were able to try out foods originating in Spanish-speaking cultures as we studied food vocabulary. On the sweet side, students tried "Piña loca," a lollipop flavored with pineapple and chili powder, Piña Colada made with pineapple juice and cream of coconut, and Jarritos sodas (lemon-lime or guava). In the sweet and sour category, they tried "Pulparindo" candy, made from tamarind fruit. They also got to see what the tamarind fruit looks like when it comes off the tree (a dry pod filled with a sticky paste with big seeds). On the savory side, students sampled plantain chips ("Platanutres"), Puerto Rican "arroz y habichuelas" (rice and pink beans in sauce) and chicken tamales. The students made the "masa" (dough) for tamales, spread that onto a large dried corn husk and put in the chicken filling before wrapping up the tamale for steaming. Student recorded their responses to how well they liked or didn't like the items, to practice their Spanish. "Piña loca" and plantain chips were favorites, as well as the Jarritos sodas. These items can be found at Los Cuates, a grocery store in Columbia, MO on Paris Road.

IN OUR CLASSROOMS: Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Burt’s 4th grade students went on a field trip to Busch Stadium today. During their trip they toured the stadium, used scientific inquiry skills to conduct an investigation of the most exciting collision in baseball – bat and ball, and explored the numbers on the back of baseball cards and how to use them by solving math problems. #Bulldawgpride
