We had a local legend come visit our summer school kids today! Emma Fischer, Harrisburg graduate - class of 2024, came to talk to the students about a less common Olympic sport - javelin. She told about her story of javelin at Harrisburg, starting with a dream of being better than her older sister and beating her sibling’s record. She succeeded in that first goal her junior year of high school. Then it was on to the next goal - making it to and winning state! She succeeded that year, with a PR throw to win it all! Her senior year of high school came and she had to overcome an elbow injury that sidelined her for 10 months. During that time, she kept up in other trainings and mental toughness to try to defend her state title in her last season. She persevered and came back to win it all BACK-TO-BACK! Her best career throw was 41.42m. Her message of perseverance was inspiring, but she also spoke to the admiration and respect she had for her coaches. She spoke about the important role her coaches played in her story and how they supported her through injury and self-doubt. What a great message from an all around AMAZING student athlete. Thank you, Emma!
Students then got to see her throwing technique and a throw. Then it was our turn but with a different spin - we threw pool noodles! It was a fun activity to mimic javelin! Middle schoolers and teachers got to throw the practice javelin. We hope students watch this sport in August at the 2024 Olympics or choose to throw in high school track one day! #BulldawgPride
